Malnutrition is not only lack of food. In our convenient fast-food life the most common thing that people inflict on their pets is too much food. It is a form of love which causes suffering. You may not like what you read from here. Read it anyway even if you can't comply. Fat pets are very unhealthy in most ways. Premature arthritis; allergic skin; bad ears; ruptured cruciate ligaments, pancreatitis (very common and often causing peritonitis and death),chronic heart failure leading to abdominal disease and kidney failure. You are NOT helping your pet by feeding it too much or too frequently. Dogs and cats are genetically programmed to eat whenever any game kill is available. They were not designed to be fed when you feed yourself so stop it. They evolved in times when food was very hard to get at certain times of the year so were programmed to engorge while it was available. If you make it available every day they will gorge. If you increase the availability, they will gorge. If you feed them 24 hors a day they will still do it. Their genetics is so programmed to lay down fat for the expected lean winter...only problem is in your home that never occurs. Leaving ad-lib (all-day) food out is seriously neglecting health as is feeding scraps from the table as well as a purchased diet. Also most itchy dogs are often too fat. Reason: I suspect that overfed dogs absorb and excrete too much protein onto the skin, This feeds the skin bacteria and causes them to make trouble by being overfed and overbreeding. Bacteria make itchy toxins.
