Goat Vaccinations

As veterinarians we have often come across a common social consensus that goats are tough! They will look after themselves? Right?

Much to peoples surprise these guys need to be look after just as closely as sheep if not more. Why? Goats are much less resistant to worm burdens. They process drench products quicker than sheep and require higher doses. This is also true for vaccinations! Commonly it is believed that they require only a vaccination once a year. However, depending on the vaccination they often need 6 monthly boosters!

So, join us! Together we can explore and build an appropriate worming and vaccination program!

We recommend Glanvac® 6 as it provides sheep and goats with protection against Cheesy Gland (CLA) and the five main clostridial diseases: black disease, black leg, malignant oedema, pulpy kidney, and tetanus. These clostridial diseases are soil residing bacteria and are widespread, commonly found in the environment. Even if animals are isolated and do not encounter other herds, these soil residing bacteria can still cause disease, the exception is CLA.

We recommend the following vaccinating schedule:

Kid Goats

First Vaccination - 8 weeks of age

Second Vaccination - 12 weeks of age ( 4 weeks later)

First 6 monthly Booster - 9 months of age

Ongoing Protection - Every 6 months

Pregnant Does - 4 weeks before Kidding

Adult Goats

First Vaccination - Any Age

Second Vaccination - 4 weeks later

First 6 monthly Booster - 6 months later

Ongoing Protection - Every 6 months

Pregnant Does - 4 weeks before Kidding
