Stress Related UTI in Cats

Cats may seem like they live very easy lives, but the truth is they can get stressed very easily. Feline urinary problems can be one of the first signs your cat is experiencing stress. It’s important to know what behaviours to be on the look out for.

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) may be experienced if your cat is showing any of the following signs:

• Straining when urinating
• Incontinence/loss of bladder control
• Urinating outside of the litter box
• Crying out in pain when urinating
• Licking genital area
• Blood in urine

Most cats will show the above signs at the upper limits of stress or are having a medical issue that needs to be addressed. Other earlier signs of stress may be if the cat is hiding more, becoming less affectionate or changing their eating behaviour.

If your cat is experiencing these stressors it is important to contact your veterinarian about medication, stress management and therapeutic diet alterations. Urinary diets such as Hills C/D can be highly beneficial for your cat’s bladder health.
* Please discuss appropriate diet changes with your veterinarian to ensure it is right for your feline friend.
